Despite Congressional gridlock on a new coronavirus relief bill executive action taken by the Trump administration will provide extended federal jobless benefits amounting to $300 per week for unemployed residents in participating states. At this juncture, at least 26 states have already signed up for the benefit while some have indicated a willingness to also provide an additional $100 per week from state coffers. Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri and Utah have already received formal approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with more applying daily. The benefit is funded however from a limited pool of $44 billion in FEMA disaster relief money and consequently will only last approximately three weeks before the funds are exhausted.
