It was reported in the Register Citizen that to celebrate Veterans Day and to show appreciation for local service members, Northwestern Regional Middle School students have partnered with two Dunkin’ Donuts locations to serve a free breakfast to local veterans on Nov. 11, from 8 to 10 a.m.
The idea to honor local veterans came from middle school teacher Krista Brazie. While reflecting on Veterans Day, Brazie enlisted her student council members to come up with a way to thank their local veterans for their service.
“The students have completely embraced this project and are learning so much by honoring these men and women who have served their country,” Krista Brazie said.
Brazie next contacted Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee John Griffey, and asked if they could schedule an event at his Dunkin’ Donuts locations. John Griffey not only agreed to the event; he decided to go one step further and offer all veterans a free breakfast.
Northwestern Region 7 students will be greeting and serving the veterans a free breakfast of their choice including any hot or cold beverage. The two Dunkin’ Donuts locations are at 3 Main St. in Winsted, and at 495 Main St. in New Hartford.
“At Dunkin’ Donuts we love to serve those who serve others,” John Griffey stated. “When Mrs. Brazie and the student council approached me regarding an event to thank our local veterans, we decided to offer our veterans breakfast on us.”
In addition, students are participating in a poetry contest in honor of Veterans Day. The windows of each Dunkin’ Donut location will be decorated with the poems. Brazie will be selecting one poem to be used in a letter of appreciation for local veterans who attend the event.
