Mat Schaffer writes in the Boston Herald that it may only take a few minutes to grab a flatbread sandwich from Dunkin’ Donuts or a soft-serve cone at Baskin-Robbins. But it takes months of tasting and testing before such items become available to the public.
Emily Bryson York reports in Advertsing Age that Dunkin’ Donuts is working with a new house blend: It’s got a new president, chief marketer and operations manager. Nigel Travis, who has been transitioning into the president-CEO role, has also hired new heads of communication and human resources. John Costello, Dunkin’ Donuts’ new marketing chief “It sounds to me like they’re looking for some fresh perspective and insights from the marketplace and not the just from the coffee and doughnut space,” said Technomic’s Darren Tristano. “After awhile, getting a fresh perspective on a pretty old brand can’t hurt.
John Vomhof Jr. reports in the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal that Caribou Coffee Co. Inc. is testing ways to perk up its breakfast offerings and soon will launch an enhanced line of chocolate beverages. Brooklyn Center-based Caribou recently added oatmeal to the menu at 25 stores in the Twin Cities and Washington, D.C., and it’s offering fresh-baked pastries at about 25 locations in the Twin Cities. If the tests are successful, those items might be rolled out companywide.
The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that Starbucks Corp. said its Via instant coffee product will be available nationally on Wednesday. And to overcome the negative image of instant coffee, the Seattle coffee giant said it will stage taste competitions between Via and its fresh-brewed coffee next week.
Leslie Gaydos reports at NECN that Tuesday September 29th, was National Coffee Appreciation Day, a holiday sure to give some a jolt. The big players were aware of the date, as McDonald’s brought in Nell Newman, Paul’s daughter, the president and co-founder of Newman’s Own Organics. They had lunch at the Ronald McDonald House in Providence.
