Yes, unfortunately you read that right! California’s new governor, democrat Gavin Newsom, just days into his term as the state’s Chief Executive Officer, has proposed imposing a new tax on drinking water. The Governor incorporated the tax as part of his budget proposal for fiscal year 2020, which is projected to end with a surplus of almost $15 Billion!! The governor would target the proceeds from the new drinking water tax to help disadvantaged communities improve their water quality. Newsom’s plan calls for the tax to raise between $110 million and $140 million annually and mirrors a proposal pushed by former governor Jerry Brown that died in the legislature last year. To jump-start the “safe and affordable drinking water fund”, Newsom would earmark $25 million from the state budget. Doesn’t all of this talk of taxing drinking water beg the question: What is in the water in California, anyway?
