Media outlets have been all over the announcement this week by Amazon that the company will raise the current $11/hour minimum wage for its lowest employees across the United States to $15 an hour beginning November 1 of this year. Voters in Arkansas will likely be asked next month to consider increasing the current state minimum $11/hour after retired Court of Appeals judge and Special Master Sam Bird ruled that proponents had collected more than enough valid voter signatures to put the question on the ballot. Issue 5 provides for the state minimum to increase by $2.50 over the next 2 years to $11 per hour in 2021. The state Supreme Court will make the final decision after they address other issues raised in a court challenge.
