It was a major upset and a total shock to the political establishment when back in June, New York bartender Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez handily beat 20-year Congressional incumbent Joseph Crowley for the democratic nomination for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Crowley was Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, essentially the 3rd most powerful democrat in the US House. Since that upset a few months ago, we have seen major upsets happen to the political establishment – with most of them moving the democrat party further to the left. Just last week, Florida democrats surprised the experts when they gave former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum the nomination. More recently, 10-term liberal incumbent Michael Capuano, another member of the democratic leadership team in the US House and Ranking Member of the House Transportation Committee was beaten handily this week by Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley. Pressley, like Gillum and Ocasio-Cortez have all enjoyed endorsements from Bernie Sanders and strongly supported regular increases in minimum wages, paid sick leave mandates on private employers, medicare-for-all and a host of other ‘progressive’ policies. We bring this to your attention to underscore the importance of small business men and women making sure to have their voice heard – and their votes counted on Election Day in November.
