Another important issue that’s being debated and will have a significant impact on businesses’ ability to rehire the help it will need is the unemployment insurance premium that democrats in Congress are pushing. It’s not back to the $600 mark just yet, but it’s certainly moving in that direction. This week, the US House Ways & Means Committee voted to extend enhanced unemployment insurance benefits through the end of August and increased the weekly premium benefit from $300 to $400, an increase of 33%! up to $400 per week! The Ways & Means Committee, chaired by Massachusetts Representative Richard Neal, is in the middle of a multi-day markup session of a host of provisions that have been pushed by the Biden administration, including an expansion of family-based tax credits, extension of the employee retention tax credit and stimulus checks of up to $1400 per individual.
