With the resignation of Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, President Trump has announced his intention to nominate Attorney Eugene Scalia as his next Secretary of Labor. Acosta officially left the post last Friday, with Deputy Secretary Patrick Pizzella thought to have had a lock on the position going forward, but President Trump decided to go in a different direction. Scalia, the son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, is a management side attorney and partner with Gibson Dunn in DC. He was a recess appointment as Labor Solicitor under President George W. Bush, having never been confirmed by the then-democrat-controlled Senate for that position. He also served in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations and has a history of fighting against a number of extreme labor initiatives. There is no timeframe as of yet for his confirmation hearing.
